Historical Homes Tour – This tour begins at the Barnesville-Lamar County Chamber of Commerce (where you can park your vehicle) and takes you past the historic First United Methodist Church and the Lamar County Courthouse. Sarah Raiford Barnes, the first wife of Barnesville founder Gideon Barnes, was buried in a cemetery where the Lamar County Courthouse is now located. Some of the bodies were later moved to Greenwood Cemetery, however Sarah’s body is said to still remain in its original location, beneath the courthouse. Gideon and his last wife, Huldah Ann, are buried together in Greenwood Cemetery. The tour continues from the Courthouse down Thomaston and Greenwood Streets. The tour is approximately 1.5 miles long. Some of the homes along the way date back to the 1800s, including the 1870 home at the corner of Thomaston Street and Rose Avenue built by the daughter of Barnesville founder Gideon Barnes.
